About This Route

The Brecon Beacons Traverse is one of the most demanding long-distance mountain routes in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, crossing the full width of the national park from west to east through some of the wildest and most dramatic landscapes in South Wales. Originally created as an extreme 24-hour challenge, the route covers an immense variety of terrain and more than 6,000 metres of ascent, linking together remote ridgelines, exposed summits, deep valleys, escarpments, moorland, and ancient mountain paths.

Beginning in the rugged western ranges around Carmarthen Fan and the Black Mountain, the traverse journeys through the sweeping ridges of Forest Fawr and the iconic central peaks including Pen y Fan, Corn Du, and Cribyn, before continuing east into the quieter and more remote Black Mountains. Along the way, walkers experience constantly changing scenery, from open upland wilderness and glacial valleys to hidden reservoirs, nature reserves, and historic mountain communities.

The route is a true test of endurance, navigation, and resilience, but it also offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Welsh mountains, showcasing the scale, beauty, and isolation that make the Brecon Beacons one of the UK’s most celebrated walking regions.
